The following safe firearm handling rules must always be followed when handling or using a firearm:
- Always treat every firearm as if it were loaded. It does not matter whether the firearm is loaded or whether it is an unloaded training firearm. The handling procedure should always be the same.
- Muzzle control: the firearm must always be pointed in a safe direction. Follow the “laser rule” and never point a firearm at anything you are not prepared to destroy.
- Trigger finger discipline: keep your finger off the trigger until you have made the decision to shoot. Keep your trigger finger deliberately positioned along the frame of the firearm. Place your finger on the trigger only after making a conscious decision to shoot.
- Identify your target and check what is behind it. Always identify the target before firing.
